As-Salaam 'Alaikum, What is this Madrasah's ruling on taking and viewing digital pictures? Does Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmed approve of digital photography? I've noticed that recently a lot of his digital images haves been circulating on the internet and social media. Does he allow this, or are people taking pictures of him and sharing them without his permission?

الجواب حامدا ومصلیا

If one gets the print of a Digital Photograph taken or if that photograph is imprinted sophistically on something, rulings of Photography/ painting of a living beings are applicable on it. However, if that digital photograph is not printed  or not imprinted on something, there exist three opinions of authentic Ulema (Religious scholars).

1: According to  few, rulings of actual picture paintings of living being apply on it.

2:  according to few ulema, rulings of normal Photography (picture paintings of living beings) do apply on it.

3:  According to few, as there exist two different opinions of Authentic Ulema-e-Fiqh on this issue , flexibility do exists for scenarios of real  need like Jahad etc. So its usage for such situations is Jaiz and permissible.

As per our opinions (established through thorough Research), one must avoid making even digital photographs/ pics. But your remark is genuine and correct that people make these pictures/ photographs without permission and without our consent (will and wish) and then they share these pics on social media themselves.

تکملۃ فتح الملھم _ (۴/۱۶۴)

فان کانت صور الانسان حیۃ بحیث تبدو علی الشاشۃ فی نفس الوقت الذی یظھر فیہ الانسان امام الکیمرا ، فان الصورۃ لا تستقر علی الکیمرا ولا علی الشاشۃ   ،وانما ھی اجزاء کھربائیۃ  تنتقل من الکیمرا الی الشاشۃ وتظھر علیھا بترتیبھا الاصلی ، ثم تفنی وتزول ۔ واما اذا احتفظ بالصورۃ فی شریط الفیدیو ، فان الصور لاتنقش علی الشریط ، وانما تحفظ فیھا الاجزاء الکھربائیۃ  التی لیس فیھا صورۃ فاذا ظھرت ھذہ الاجزاء علی الشاشۃ ظھرت مرۃ  اخری بذلک الترتیب الطبیعی ، ولکن لیس لھا ثبات ولا استقرار علی الشاشۃ ، انما ھی تظھر وتفنی ۔ فلا یبدو ان ھناک مرحلۃ من المراحل تنتقش فیھا الصورۃ علی شیء بصفۃ مستقرۃ او دائمۃ ۔وعلی ھذا فتنزیل ھذہ الصورۃ المستقرۃ مشکل۔
